** APOLOGIES IF YOU SEE/GET THIS MULTIPLE TIMES. IT'S **
** BEING SENT TO ALL CS CLASS LISTS. THAT'S THE ONLY **
** WAY TO REACH AS MANY STUDENTS AS POSSIBLE **

The Computer Sciences Department has established several departmental
awards for excellence, including awards in

	* teaching by faculty members or lecturers
	* teaching by graduate students
	* service by essentially anyone involved with the department
	  (including staff and secretaries)

These will be given out on MAY 6th during a gathering of the whole
department. (In the same meeting, Student-ACM will announce the winner
of the "Student's Choice Professor of the Year" award, for which you
should also vote.)

If you have had a CS graduate student, lecturer, or faculty member as
an instructor or teaching assistant
(CURRENTLY or in EARLIER semesters) whose quality of
teaching has been outstanding and you feel will be an appropriate
recipient of one of the teaching awards, make an effort and write a
recommendation letter for them. Similarly for anyone you think has been
providing outstanding service to the department. Details about each
award are given in

	http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~raghu/awards.html

Your letters and/or email messages need to be sent/given to

Jim Goodman: goodman@cs (for the teaching award
					   for professors and lecturers)
Raghu Ramakrishnan: raghu@cs (for the teaching award
					   for graduate students
				           and the service award)
by FRIDAY, APRIL 30, at 5PM.

The input that we receive from students in our classes is one of the
most important factors for these awards, so I strongly encourage all of
you to take some time and write a letter, even a short note, if you feel
that someone is doing exceptional work in teaching or service.

Raghu Ramakrishnan
