The advantages as I see them: 1. Reduced tape cost 2. Makes new boot tape each time 3. Keeps work done so far on tapes with a bad spot 4. Labels on tapes makes reloading more likely to be correct 5. Reduced tape testing 6. Allows use of slightly short tapes 7. Runs multiple dumps/restores simultaneously to keep system busy on restore (if done to multiple drives) and dump 8. Allows easier dumping of workstations, if we should so choose 9. Allows hooks to add our own goodies, such as streaming tape drive buffers 10. Makes files systems automatically on restore Disadvantages 1. Longer restore time from epochs if the system doesn't keep track of what records are on what tape 2. File systems not isolated by tape (although if we are moving something, we could always make a normal dump tape). 3. If you lose the first tape, is everything lost?
